Several options exist for artists, performers, athletes, as well as those who travel with them and their families.
The "O" visas are for persons who have shown extraordinary abilities in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics. This category can be applied to a wide variety of individuals ranging from those engaged in traditional artistic or scientific pursuits to chefs, graphic artists, etc... To qualify for an O visa, individuals will have to show that they have achieved high recognition in their field. O visas are good for an initial period of three years, renewable on a yearly basis thereafter. They do not require academic degrees, but they must be filed by a US employer, so a job offer or position is necessary.
Athletes who have achieved international recognition and groups of entertatiners can qualify for a "P"visa, as can those traveling to assist them and their dependents. P visas are usually for a shorter duration of time, though they can be granted for a period of up to five years, renewable for a maximum total stay of ten years. To qualify, athletes, teams, or groups will have to show that they have achieved a high level of skill and recognition. Like O visas, P visas require a US employer to sponsor the athlete or group.
For individuals who have achieved high level of achievements in their field and wish to pursue an application for a green card, no employer will be necessary. However, these achievements must show that each individual has reached the top of their field.
